Briana Torres-Carter, 23, of Bridgeport, who was pregnant, and Shalymar Herrera, 18, of West Haven were pronounced dead at the scene of a two-car crash on Sunday in Shelton, said Lt. Robert Kozlowsky.
Both were passengers in a Mini Cooper that was being operated by Torres-Carter's husband, 19-year-old Lawrence Carter of Bridgeport, Kozlowsky said.
Lawrence Carter is currently in the hospital in critical condition. Also in the Mini Cooper was 19-year-old Jessie Abrams of Bridgeport. Abrams is hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, he added.
An investigation into the crash revealed that the Mini Cooper was traveling southbound on River Road when it crashed into a Saturn traveling northbound on River Road, police said.
There was a third non-contact vehicle involved in the crash. Police have identified the vehicle and the driver of the non-contact vehicle.
The driver of the Saturn, 25-year-old Caitlin Kalafus of Pennsylvania, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Her two passengers, Carly Kalafus, 22, and Paul Valleau, 26, both of Pennsylvania, also received non-life threatening injuries, Kozlowsky said,
The Shelton Police Traffic Division Reconstruction Team is currently investigating this accident. No enforcement action has been taken at this time.
